WALNUT CREEK -- Three people have been taken to a hospital after a pileup on southbound Interstate 680 that involved at least five cars, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The original crash occurred between two cars about 8:55 p.m. near the North Main Street offramp, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. At least three other cars crashed into the first two while trying to avoid the collision.

Three people were transported from the scene, Van Eckhardt said; the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

The three right lanes were closed to traffic as five tow trucks were called to clear the roadway, Van Eckhardt said. All lanes were reopened about 10 p.m.
