SAN LORENZO -- Neighbors on an typically quiet street in unincorporated Alameda County awoke to gunfire just after midnight Wednesday and emerged from their homes to find a man shot to death in the middle of the street.
Several residents said they dialed 911 just after midnight after hearing gunshots near Hacienda Avenue just south of Interstate 880, said Alameda County Sheriff's Office spokesman J.D. Nelson.
Deputies found the victim lying in the 18000 block of Robscott Avenue, halfway between Perkins Drive and Ginger Avenue.
Nelson did not know how many times the man was hit by gunfire, but did say he was shot multiple times. The victim is from Alameda County, but no other information was released about his identity.
The body was taken away in an Alameda County Coroner's van about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Nicholas Crankshaw, who lives on Robscott Avenue about five houses from where the victim was found, said he was awake inside his home when he heard three pops and then a car speed away toward Perkins Drive.
When he went outside, the car was gone and dozens of other residents emerged from their homes.
The victim, who wore shorts and a black T-shirt, was lying face-up on a speed bump in the middle of the road, Crankshaw said.
There was nothing they could do, he said.
"He already was dead," Crankshaw said Wednesday morning, watching along with other neighbors as crime scene investigators worked the scene Wednesday morning on their street, which has four speed bumps and is lined by two dozen well-kept homes.
Inside yellow crime-scene tape, blood stained the ground beside the speed bump where the victim was found.
Crankshaw said he has lived on the street his entire life and "nothing has ever happened in our neighborhood like this."
Neither a suspect nor motive was immediately known, Nelson said, and the fatal shooting remains under investigation.
