REDWOOD CITY -- A San Jose man pleaded not guilty to charges he pimped and beat a woman whom he pushed into prostitution after she lost her job, a prosecutor said Tuesday.

The woman, who was from Colorado, ended up living with Kevin Pearl Sims, 24, because she knew no one else in San Jose. Soon she was being advertised for sex online, San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said.

Sims entered his plea Friday in San Mateo County Superior Court and has a Dec. 2 trial date.

Prosecutors said the unnamed woman and Sims met because he was selling marijuana to her co-workers at a magazine subscription sales company in San Jose. Their meeting turned into a sexual relationship and was still going 10 days later when she lost her job.

"She called (Sims) since she knew no one else in San Jose," Wagstaffe said. "Within days (he) had her working for him as a prostitute."

The woman at first agreed to work as a prostitute, but subsequently changed her mind. Prosecutors say Sims beat her, forcing her back into the sex trade. On May 1 they were in San Mateo and he allegedly beat her after she tried to keep $200 from an encounter.

Wagstaffe said the woman called police and reported Sims. Police said they later found text messages and Internet postings to back up her allegations against him.

Sims is out of jail on $20,000 bail and is next due in court Oct. 29, Wagstaffe said.
