CAMPBELL -- An elderly couple who died in a suspected murder-suicide over the weekend had a pact that they would end their lives together if one got too sick to care for the other, Campbell police said.

Police were called to the 200 block of Union Avenue around 2:30 p.m. Saturday after a family member discovered two people with gunshot wounds and called police. A husband and wife, ages 89 and 92 respectively, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Campbell police said an investigation revealed that the couple had an agreement where if one was unable to care for the other, they would take their own lives. The plan was carried out after the wife's health had rapidly declined in recent weeks, police said.

It appears that the man used a handgun he owned to shoot his wife and then himself.

No one else appears to have been involved in the deaths, police said.
