OAKLAND -- A 43-year-old man who was hosting a birthday party for a friend at his East Oakland apartment was fatally shot late Friday when he went outside to have a cigarette, police said Saturday.

Police said Frederick Parker died early Saturday from his wounds.

The shooting happened at 11:07 p.m. outside Parker's apartment complex in the 2300 block of 96th Avenue, near MacArthur Boulevard.

Officer Eric Milina said Parker was hosting a party for a friend at the apartment and went outside to smoke. As he stood on the sidewalk he was shot by someone who then fled.

Parker died at a hospital at 1:01 a.m. Saturday.

Milina said there may have been other people outside with Parker who left before police arrived.

He said police do not have a motive for the shooting.

The killing was Oakland's 88th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 130 homicides in the city.

Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information can call police at 510-238-3821 or Crime Stopers at 510-777-8572.
