I was aghast by Daniel Borenstein column on spiking of public pensions. The example of a small town fire chief retiring at 50 with nearly a quarter million dollars per annum pension is outrageous.

It is hard to take politicians' calls for more funding or the need for service cuts seriously when this unresponsible behavior continues.

I won't rehash Borenstein's excellent column. I will add, however, that we are naive to believe politicians will even try to fix the problem without extreme pressure from the media and a threat of an angry taxpayer-supported proposition.
