    Colorful courtroom

Alameda County Superior Court Judge Hugh Walker's courtroom is known for its color -- most of it coming from comments by the veteran judge. Whether he is making comments about the artwork of a graffiti artist or informing people making their first appearance in Department 701 that if they don't go see the public defender in a reasonable amount of time that he is "going to be cranky."

However, the Pleasanton judge known for dealing out justice with a smile and a joke or two was upstaged recently. During a recent morning session, Walker was outdone by two different women, who provided plenty of color.

    The first

defendant appeared for a vehicle violation and arrived in court with a headband made of flowers to accessorize her rainbow hair. The second defendant, in custody on a drug charge and later released by Walker on a plea deal, appeared in a green Alameda County jail jumpsuit and bright purple hair.

Neither outfit elicited a comment from Walker.

Top stories of the Pleasanton Times

    July 21, 1971

    Headline: "Charlatan at the Gate"

Someone apparently is out to make a fast buck or two by charging people to get into (the unfinished) Shadow Cliffs Park. A Pleasanton resident told the Times a man was at the gate last weekend and demanded a donation before he would allow entrance into the park. He asked the locals: "How do you expect us to get this place open if you don't help?"

"A charlatan," said Monte Monteagle at the East Bay Recreation Park District. "We certainly welcome all donations, but we don't get them that way!"

Next year, when the park is completed, a nominal parking fee will be instituted.

Headline: "Unification Vote to Follow High School"

Voters throughout the Pleasanton Township will vote next June on the existing Amador Valley High School District boundaries as the only possibility for a unified school system to serve the full township.

The unification proposal was already approved by the Pleasanton Elementary and Amador High School boards of trustees. The Murray and perhaps Sunol school boards are expected to concur.

Another plan that would have tied Dublin to San Ramon Valley was rejected by that Contra Costa County school district.

Grocery Shopping: Safeway -- California golden corn was selling at five ears for 49 cents; seven-bone roasts were 69 cents a pound and a bottle of peanut oil sold for 62 cents.

At the Movies: Enea Brothers Theaters, San Ramon, double feature -- Steve McQueen in "Le Mans" and Richard Harris as "A Man Called Horse."
