Baseball
Alamo resident Zachary Scherman, 14, traveled to Nettuno Italy on Aug. 7 on behalf of the Northern California Travel Ball Association and the USSSA to participate in the World Baseball Classic "Mundial Hit 2012".
Scherman represented the U15 team of the USA that had representatives from all over the country but he was the only one from Alamo. Teams in the tourney were from various parts of Italy, Spain, Slovakia, Czech Republic at China.
The USA Team won the title with a 7-0 victory, culminated with one of Scherman's two saves in the Championship game against the Southern Italy team on Aug. 12. In seven games, Scherman went 7 for 17, with a .412 batting average, including nine RBIs. On the mound, he threw in three games and had an ERA of .000 and a WHIP of .86.
Scherman is a freshman at De La Salle High School and was recently selected one of the "Select 60" of Northern California chosen by "Got em Baseball" out of Sacramento.
