Smashing, Iconic Prints -- 5-10 p.m. opening reception Sept. 28. Exhibit is open noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday. Meet artist James Fortune during the opening reception. Live music by the Shanks and beer sampling by Schubros Brewery. Shop for the Cause -- 1-6 p.m. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Tri-Valley Chapter presents its annual vendor fair. There will be over 30 booths with unique items, including fine art, home decor, jewelry, antiques, purses and more. Franco Finn, the Golden State Warrior's "Hype Man," will emcee the event. Funds are being raised to help sustain programs. Veterans Memorial Hall, 522 S. L Street, Livermore.

Art in the Park Fine Arts Festival -- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, This Fundraiser for Art in the Schools. The San Ramon Valley Unified School District will showcase the art of over 75 professional artists from all around the Bay Area who work in painting, jewelry, ceramics, photocopy and other media. There will be live music, food, wine, children's activities and a juried art exhibition. Central Park, 12501 Alcosta Blvd., San Ramon. Free admission.

oct. 6-7, 13-14

Livermore Valley Opera -- 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14. The LVO will kick off their opera season with Puccini's La Boheme, starring Marie Plette as Mimi, David Gustafson as Rodolfo and Kristin Clayton as Musetta. The opening night gala will start at 5 p.m., guests will have a chance to meet Music Director Eugene Brancoveanu and Conductor Alexander Katsman. Uncle Yu's at the Vineyard, 39 S. Livermore Ave., Livermore. Gala tickets are $75 and are available at the theater box office. Bankhead Theater, 2400 First St., Livermore. Competition for Young Musicians -- The Livermore-Amador Symphony Association annual competition is open to instrumentalists and vocalists who reside or attend school in Pleasanton, Sunol, Livermore, Dublin or San Ramon. Students are eligible through grade 12; if not enrolled in high school, the maximum age is 17. All instruments will be considered. Two musicians will be selected to perform as soloists with the symphony on Feb. 23, and each will be awarded $300. Application deadline is Oct. 7. Competed application must be accompanied by an $8 fee and a CD or cassette tape for preliminary screening. More Jazz in the Library -- 8 p.m. "Voices of Jazz" concert features sultry jazz vocalist Daria and trumpeter Dave Rocha. will perform a fusion of classic Jazz, Brazilian, blues and Latin rhythms. As well as songs by the Beatles and other tunes from the 40s to the 80s. San Ramon Library, 100 Montgomery St. Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors and students. Baha'is Celebrate Centennial -- 2 p.m., A celebration of the 100th anniversary of the leader of the Baha'i faith 's1912 travel across America. Incident at Vichy -- 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 19, through Nov. 10. Role Players presents Arthur Miller's suspenseful and gritty World War II drama that is a fascinating and frightening psychological test of the limits of mankind's capacity for good and evil. Grape Stomp Half Marathon -- 8 a.m. Oct. 21. The Grape Stomp consists of three distances -- something for everyone. The Half Marathon uses the Arroyo Mocho Trail and the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Trails through the beautiful south valley vineyards up to Holdener Park. The 10K is an out-and-back course that stays entirely on the Arroyo Mocho Trail. The 5K course stays on paved trails by the river area on the Arroyo Mocho/LARPD trails. Robertson Park, 3200 Robertson Park Road, Livermore. Cost for half marathon, $65, 10K, $40 and 5K for $30.

Songs of Laughter -- 3 p.m. Oct. 21. The Valley Concert Chorale will open their concert season with "An Afternoon with Gilbert and Sullivan." Enjoy tasty treats while listening to songs from popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas including The Mikado, Pirates of Penzance, H.M.S. Pinafore and more in this popular event to benefit the Chorale. Raffle prize drawings add to the fun. Asbury United Methodist Church, 4743 East Ave, Livermore. Tickets are $40 each.

International Dance Festival -- For new dancers. 1-5 p.m. Oct. 21. The purpose of this free event is to introduce the pleasure of folk dancing to people of all ages who might enjoy the lively music and aerobic exercise that folk dancing provides.
