Amador Valley stuns Monte Vista

  • The Amador Valley High girls basketball team upset Monte Vista 52-47 on Jan. 11, holding off the Mustangs in the fourth quarter to move into a tie for first place in the East Bay Athletic League. Alysse Ketner, a senior captain, led the Dons with 17 points, and Ariah Mack added 16 points. The Mustangs had upset Carondelet 63-60 on Jan. 8. Heading into this week, Monte Vista, Amador Valley and Carondelet were tied atop the league with 3-1 records.

    Livermore pulls a surprise in wild race

  • The Livermore High girls soccer team earned a surprising 0-0 draw against first-place San Ramon Valley on Jan. 8 in the wide-open EBAL soccer race. Livermore then fell 1-0 to Carondelet on Jan. 10, and Carondelet lost 2-0 to San Ramon Valley on Jan. 12. The Wolves entered the week with a pivotal game looming against second-place Granada on Jan. 17 in Danville.

    Amador Valley registers upset

  • The Amador Valley High girls soccer team snapped a three-game losing streak with 1-0 victory over defending North Coast Section Division I champion Monte Vista on Jan. 12. Youth was served on the goal. Dons sophomore defender Briana Marquez scored off an assist by freshman Sophie Sanchez in the 76th minute. Goalkeeper Lexi Nicholas made eight saves for the shutout.

    Cowboys get first EBAL win

  • The Livermore High boys basketball team earned its first EBAL win of the season with a 65-53 victory over Foothill on Jan. 11. The balanced Cowboys had seven players score at least seven points. Livermore improved to 11-5 overall and 1-3 in league.

    Dublin rolls in DFAL

  • Dublin High's girls basketball team improved to 14-3 overall and 3-0 in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League with a 50-24 win over host Alhambra on Jan. 11. Four players paced the balanced Gaels: captain Alison Martinez, with 12 points, Alyssa Ybarra (11), Jojuan Carrington (10) and Kristian Aubry (10).

    Valley Christian stays sharp

  • The Valley Christian High girls basketball team used balanced scoring in a 55-37 rout of Head-Royce in the Bay Counties League-East on Jan. 12 as the Vikings improved to 14-2 overall and 3-0 in league. Freshman Nina Bessolo and sophomore Alyssa Lorenzo each had 11 for the Vikings.

  • Granada at San Ramon Valley, girls soccer, Jan. 17, 6 p.m. -- The unbeaten Wolves will take on the second-place Matadors in one of the featured games of the week.

  • California at Monte Vista, boys soccer, Jan. 17, 6 p.m. -- The Mustangs, who entered the week in first place in the balanced EBAL, will host California in a pivotal battle. The Mustangs and Grizzlies entered the week with two losses combined in 31 total matches this season.

  • Trevor John, Monte Vista boys basketball -- John had a game-high 18 points in a 56-35 win over Amador Valley on Jan. 11, which kept the Mustangs tied with De La Salle for second place.

  • Kameron Johnson, Granada boys basketball -- The sophomore had a game-high 18 points in a 79-63 win over California on Jan. 11.

  • Ariah Mack, Amador Valley girls basketball -- Mack had 36 points and 11 rebounds combined in the Dons' two wins last week, including an upset of Monte Vista on Jan. 11.

  • Alexis Vandevanter, San Ramon Valley girls soccer -- Vandevanter had a goal and an assist in a 2-0 win over Carondelet on Jan. 12.
