WALNUT CREEK -- Apparently, Ben Wood did not like how he ended the first half, so he sought redemption.

The junior quarterback threw an interception just before half that led to the only score for the Dragons, but more than made up for it. He had two long touchdown runs in the second half and finished with 198 yards rushing -- 260 total --as the Knights (1-0) avenged a loss to the Dragons from last year with the season-opening victory.

"In the locker room at halftime, my teammates just rallied around me and told me to keep playing hard," Wood said. "The pick was frustrating, but our defense was amazing tonight and I knew we could keep them from scoring anymore."

Despite having just 27 total yards in the first half, Bishop O'Dowd (0-1) took the lead into halftime, 7-3, thanks to the 27-yard interception return for a touchdown by Julian Soto.

The offense didn't pick up much for the Dragons, who had just 95 yards of offense for the game.

Wood had more than that on two plays, with his first touchdown coming on a 65-yard bolt early in the third quarter, while the second was a 53-yard score late in the fourth that helped new head coach Mike Downing to a win in his first game at the helm.
