The day after Thanksgiving is supposed to signal the start of the holiday shopping season, but a lot of folks at the Paragon Outlets in Livermore decided to treat themselves to bargains this year.

"I have no room left in my closets," said Alamo resident Michele Silva while looking through her sacks of purses, a few of which she'd picked out for herself. "I don't know where I'm going to put everything."

As one anonymous Coach outlet shopper, who made the pre-dawn drive from Merced, summed it up: "You come out to find gifts for other people, but you end up shopping for yourself."

Headline: "Governor Routs Rare Book Sale"

"I'd be absolutely opposed to selling rare books," said Reagan at a news conference. "The University of California library is the proper place to be the repository for rare books,"

Reagan was responding to earlier reports that administration members were pushing to sell the books to help keep the university system in the black. He said that someone in the university system "leaked the information to the press.

"That report was comprised of working papers of a team of auditors we sent out with instructions to find everything they could," said Reagan. "It was not the final report, and there were no final recommendations in it."

"University officials knew this, and I even received a letter of apology from one university president apologizing for the leak," said Reagan.

Headline: "Alameda Supervisors to Study '911' Dialing to Summon Emergency Service"

A single emergency number for fire and police matters may be instigated countywide by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. A similar program, known as the "911" system, presently exists in the city of Alameda.

The recommendation by the county administrator will be to establish an advisory committee to study the feasibility of such a program. Should the program be enacted, valley residents would dial "911" for fire, ambulance or police emergencies, instead of the individual numbers or the operator.
