Heritage impresses at Stargell Classic

  • The Heritage High baseball team advanced to the semifinals of the Willie Stargell Classic at Encinal High in Alameda with a 5-1 win over Dublin on March 28. Heritage scored twice in the first inning and added three more in the third. That was more than enough offense for pitcher Kevin Milam, who had nine strikeouts and allowed just one hit in six innings pitched. The victory was the third in a row for the Patriots. Heritage played Alameda on April 2, after this newspaper went to press.

    Deer Valley loses pitchers' duel

  • Jesse Tamelier and Andres Rodriguez combined to allow just five hits and one run in a nonleague game against Clayton Valley on March 28. But the pitching duo didn't get any run support as the Wolverines lost to the Eagles 1-0. Clayton Valley scored one run in the fifth inning and allowed just four hits to Deer Valley, two of which came courtesy of Rodriguez, went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.

  • Deer Valley at San Ramon Valley Invitational, boys volleyball, April 4, TBA -- Deer Valley will try to improve on its 7-1 record when it heads to the San Ramon Invitational.

  • Heritage at Willie Stargell Classic, baseball, April 4, TBA -- Heritage looks to carry the momentum of its first two wins into the final round of the Willie Stargell Classic.

  • Livermore Stampede, softball, April 5, 7:15 p.m.. -- The championship game of the Championship Flight of the three-day, 16-team tournament will be at the Ernie Rodrigues (Robertson Park) Softball complex. Heritage is the lone BVAL team participating.

  • Stanford Invitational, track and field, April 5, all day -- Some of the best high school track and field athletes in the state will meet at Stanford for one of the better early season meets. Heritage's Frank Kurtz is scheduled to participate in the 400 meters.

  • Heritage at Deer Valley, boys golf, April 7, 3:30 p.m. -- Deer Valley will put its undefeated record on the line when they host Heritage in their fifth BVAL contest.

    Stars of the week

  • Kevin Milam, Heritage, baseball -- Milam struckout nine batters and dominant in a 5-1 victory over Dublin in the second round of the Willie Stargell Classic. Milam allowed no earned runs, and gave up just one hit in six innings of work.

  • Andres Rodriguez, Deer Valley baseball -- Rodriguez combined on a five-hitter with Jesse Tamelier in a 1-0 nonleague loss to Clayton Valley on March 28. Rodriguez, also went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double.

  • Joey Whipple, Pittsburg, baseball -- Whipple led Pittsburg to 3-0 shutout victory over Mission San Jose, striking out four batters through six scoreless innings on the mound.
