In the weekly feature called "e-views," we invite readers to answer a question via email.

Last week's question:

Do you think local schools have proper security in place? What more can they or should they do to be sure to protect our children?

IT IS NOT the security at schools, it is the breakdown of our mental health system that is failing all of us. People in need of diagnosis or treatment don't have a place to go. Good intentions but ignorant people helped close the asylums, therefore throwing all sorts of people out on the street where the treatment was "good luck."

It is amazing to me that we don't have more incidents from this sorry system. But, it is the political way to save a buck from those who are helpless and can't fight back.

I DO NOT think our schools have enough security. There should be a process where any teachers that want to "carry" should be allowed -- after they have gone through approved training classes, etc.

If there had been a few teachers with weapons at the school site in Connecticut, it would have ended much sooner without the horrific toll. You can't wait for the police to come help -- they only arrive to take names and mop up. These crazies pick sites like schools and movie theatres for a reason. They know that they are unprotected. They never choose an armory or police station (or doughnut shop).

TEACHERS THAT BECOME qualified should be allowed to have concealed weapons at school. Security guards could be an alternative; however, with financial restraints, it would be more logical to use existing paid staff. There needs to be more emphasis on mental health care opportunities. Studies should be pursued on the effect of violent video games, etc., that may affect one's behavior.
