As the BART extension into Antioch comes closer to reality for local commuters, a preliminary study is under way on an additional future station and far East County officials are weighing in on the discussion.
Ellen Smith, an eBART planning manager, told the Brentwood City Council this week about six potential locations for eBART, including Laurel Road in Oakley, Lone Tree Way, Brentwood's Sand Creek Road, Balfour Road in Brentwood, Discovery Bay/Byron or at the Mokelumne Trail crossing in Brentwood. Although Brentwood officials expressed some interest in the Mokelumne option, they said that more public input was necessary before a favorite could be chosen.
Councilman Steve Barr said there was mixed community reaction toward the proposed station locations at a past BART meeting with residents.
"I would like to hear a lot more from residents for an official stance from the city," he said. "Personally, the Mokelumne area gives Brentwood the most opportunity to plan around the station."
Councilman Joel Bryant agreed that more input was "desired and vital" before favoring a particular station option. He said that there are some residents who would not like to see it located farther into Brentwood than Mokelumne because of concerns about additional crime from an eBART station.
"It opens up our community to some undesirable elements," Bryant said.
BART plans to study ridership rates and other details on each station through an upcoming study. No other aspects of the potential station are currently funded, Smith noted.
According to Smith, the Mokelumne option would serve Antioch, Oakley and Brentwood well and be easily accessible to walkers and bicyclists.
"It is an opportunity to have a different type of station," she said.
Councilman Erick Stonebarger said that the six locations are a good start and he is excited about the future Hillcrest station. He added that another station could be 30 years away.
"It (Brentwood station) is definitely not imminent," Stonebarger said.
