Service club holds free throw competition
The Knights of Columbus will hold a free-throw competition for boys and girls ages 10 to 14 at Timber Point Elementary School gymnasium, 40 Newbury Lane, Discovery Bay.
The competition will be 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30.

Liberty High students doing public art projects
Far East County art admirers now have an opportunity this spring to see public art work in progress as students from Liberty High School's Arts and Humanities Academy paint five utility boxes in downtown Brentwood. This agricultural themed art project is the second one for AHA students to complete in the city.
They started working last week and they will continue through May on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The art work will reflect popular locally grown produce including strawberries, corn, cherries, peaches and pumpkins.
The boxes are located at Brentwood Boulevard and Second Street, Brentwood Boulevard and Oak Street, Walnut Boulevard and Oak, Second and Maple Street and Second and Pine Street.

A $50,500 grant awarded to the city of Brentwood will make three street crossings safer for local residents.
The funding comes from the Transportation Development Act program and is being awarded to pedestrian and bicycle projects by the Metropolitan Transportation Commission.
Three sets of rectangle-shaped rapid flashing beacons will be installed on Brentwood Boulevard at Village Drive, Brentwood Boulevard and Maple Street and Walnut Boulevard at McClarren Road. All three crosswalks are five lanes wide.
Brentwood City Councilman Joel Bryant said that he has witnessed pedestrians almost being hit by vehicles in these locations.
Right now, there are six sets of these beacons throughout the city, which were installed in October 2012.

Memorial service to honor Carol Marchetti
A celebration of life service will be held for longtime community volunteer Carol Marchetti, who passed away in Mexico on Dec. 18.
Services will be held at the VFW Hall, corner of Fulton Shipyard Road and Wilbur Avenue, on at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 9.

Brentwood kindergarten registration
It is that time of year again for kindergarten registration in the Brentwood Union School District. The 2013-2014 academic year registration will also include transitional kindergarten.
For kindergarten in Brentwood next year, eligible students must be 5 years old on or before Oct. 1. Those children who are 5 years old between Oct. 2 and Dec. 2 are eligible for transitional kindergarten.
Those children turning 5 years old between Sept. 1 and Oct. 1 are also encouraged by the district to enroll in transitional kindergarten for this upcoming academic year only. Parents of kindergartners should contact their child's future school site starting on Feb. 13 for the scheduling of registration appointments.
