Diablo Valley gets its share of fog called thickest in years: Diablo Valley got its share of the dense fog, which blanketed central California the first half of this week, and old-timers declared it was the thickest they had seen in many years. While traffic slowed to a crawl and driving was made hazardous, the East County area was fortunate in having no serious accidents as a result of the fog. One car crashed into a pole near Fredericks corner south of town and snapped off. The car was towed away before the identity of the driver was learned. There were numerous incidents in which drivers became lost or confused. In on such case, a motorist driving to Brentwood along Walnut Boulevard missed the city entirely and landed in a ditch along Dainty Avenue. The Martinez-Benicia ferry was put out of service for 24 hours when the SS Charles A. Van Damme crashed into the outboard wing of the Martinez slip. Two persons were slightly injured.

A bountiful harvest for the Giannini family: Eppolito and Antonia Giannini are going out with style. The Brentwood farmers are retiring and for their last harvest they've received Diamond Walnut Growers distinguished honor of being selected as the best quality seer walnut growers in the state.
The couple have been farming together since they were married in May 1954, and, although their walnuts
It is also the year that "Eppy," as his family fondly refers to him, turned the farm over to his wife. "Here she out did me," he laughs, "she did the best."
The two of them together have worked their 36-acre farm -- from pruning in the late winter to harvesting in late September and everything in between. Each has a tractor, and their grandchildren get upset if they see grandpa sitting on grandma's tractor, and vice versa.
The Gianninis have done most of the work on their farm, relying on each other instead of on outside sources.
