ANTIOCH -- Police hope the public can help identify a woman whose body was found almost 25 years ago in a gully off Somersville Road.
A caller to Antioch police in April 1988 reported finding the decomposing body off Somersville just south of Buchanan Road. At the time, police did not find any indication that woman had been the victim of an assault or a homicide. The body had likely been there for several weeks.
Antioch police issued a news release on the cold case Tuesday, along with a clay likeness of the woman's face and other pictures of the items of clothing she was wearing, in hopes that somebody will recognize her, Lt. Diane Aguinaga said.
The department is audited by the Department of Justice each year on its unidentified and missing persons.
"She comes up every year, and it just bothers me that we have never identified her. She is someone's daughter, mother, sister, friend. I would like for the family to have closure," Aguinaga said. "To be part of that woman's family and not know what happened ... it would be just terrible."
The woman was a black female, about 40 years old and about 5-foot-4; her weight could not determined. She was wearing a light-pink, long-sleeved sweater with thin horizontal blue stripes; jeans over gray sweatpants, and light blue Nike tennis shoes. She also wore a gold watch with a maroon face, and a thin gold necklace, with a gold pendant of the letter "F."
"I would like to hope that maybe there was someone that knows something, but didn't want to come forward. They don't have to identify themselves, but even if they just give us a name and say this is what happened, it would help," Aguinaga said.
The East Contra Costa region, particularly Pittsburg and Antioch, has had its share of unsolved cases over the years. However, it is very rare for someone not to be identified, Aguinaga said.
Antioch has two unsolved cases where bodies found have not been identified. The 1988 Jane Doe case is the oldest, while the other is the case of a John Doe found in November 1995 buried near the railroad tracks west of the Antioch Marina.
Anyone with any information about the Jane Doe case is asked to call Detective John Fortner at 925-779-6930. Tips can also be texted to police by sending a message to 274637 using the keyword ANTIOCH.
