Jose Garcia is consistently kicking it into gear -- quite literally.

As a combat sports recovery coach and athletic trainer, Garcia's job is to go, go, go.

The Brentwood resident opened Body by Jose at Lifestyle Health and Fitness Center in Oakley at the beginning of the year. He moved to East County about four years ago to help his family open Brentwood's L.A. Boxing gym, where he was the general manager and senior trainer.

Garcia helps a wide variety of folks from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) athletes to pro competitors (bodybuilders and the like) to working mothers and youth athletes.

Garcia enjoys "adding value to -- and changing -- my clients' lives" and shares how he's assisting a 70-year-old "regain full use of limbs and mobility," helping kids to lead an active lifestyle, and guiding pro athletes to "increase their longevity in their field."

He also really values being a "positive role model to kids and young adults." While he relishes his job, he's challenged to find "a way to balance it with having a family," which includes his 22-month-old son and another baby due in May.

"I often have a heavy workload, especially when working with professional mixed-"Šmartial arts fighters on title fights, which take me away from home for long periods of time," he said.

His life in the fitness field has given him an array of memories, including working with champion Nick Diaz. At the time, Diaz suffered from injuries that prevented him from even running well. With an upcoming match, it was Garcia who got the pro back in fighting shape and helped him avoid surgery.

Garcia is currently readying Diaz for a "highly anticipated" fight against Georges St. Pierre on March 16 in Montreal.

He's known and worked with Diaz for a couple of years, and helped him prepare for two world titles.

"I count him as a client and a good friend," Garcia said. "(I know) he is very different than how he is portrayed in the media. He is actually a very humble and respectful ... and a supreme athlete."

Once that's over, Garcia will focus on an official grand opening at his gym for later this spring.

Happy with his current place in life, Garcia said he's "grateful to Javier Mendez and Joanna Takacs (from San Jose's American Kickboxing Academy headquarters).

"Working with them has really opened a lot of new doors for me -- like being able to work with other world champion MMA fighters like Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier and Muhammed 'King Mo' Lawal."

According to his website, Garcia is becoming the "go-to person to assist fighters recovering from injuries and ailments ... Employing massage, therapeutic and 'energy-reading' techniques, Garcia has been dubbed a 'healer' by his clients ..."
