OAKLEY -- Professional anglers will be descending on Oakley in a couple of months for an annual bass fishing contest.

FLW Outdoors EverStart Series Western Division Bass Tournament will take place May 16-18 at Russo's Marina on Bethel Island, one of five local businesses to date that are sponsoring the event.

Early birds can watch the pros blast off in their bass boats at 7 a.m. each day, while others can check out the ones that didn't get away at the 3 p.m. daily weigh-ins.

Oakley's event is the third of four tournaments in the Western division, which is one of five series of bass fishing contests across the country collectively known as the EverStart series.

Fishermen compete for thousands of dollars in prizes -- think sleek bass boats with 200 horsepower engines -- as well as the title Strike King Angler of the Year, an honor that entitles recipients to cast their rods in the highest stakes competition of them all: the 2014 Forrest Wood Cup.

Among the anglers in this local event are Discovery Bay resident Jack Farage who won a Ranger Z117 boat and Oakley's Chris Trumbull.

Participants fished in Lake Oroville and Arizona's Lake Roosevelt before coming to Oakley, and will travel to Clearlake for the final competition in October.
