Freedom baseball extends win streak

  • The Freedom High baseball team started its Bay Valley Athletic League season with a pair of victories, as the Falcons beat Pittsburg 17-3 on April 16 and Antioch 7-2 on April 18. Against the Panthers, junior TJ Briggs allowed one earned run and had seven strikeouts in 5¿1/3 innings. Briggs also doubled for Freedom, which entered this week on a seven-game win streak. The Falcons, Liberty and Heritage all started the week 2-0 in the BVAL.

    Heritage softball starts strong in BVAL

  • The Heritage softball team won its first two BVAL games, beating Deer Valley 9-4 on April 16 and Pittsburg 14-1 on April 18. Against the Pirates, Malia Rivers went 4 for 4 and Kennedy Silay was 3 for 3. The wins helped the Patriots forget about a disappointing Livermore Stampede, where they went 1-4.

    Deer Valley volleyball is dominant again

  • The Deer Valley boys volleyball team won its fourth straight tournament April 20, beating Lowell-San Francisco 25-18, 25-27, 15-9 in the Gold Division championship match at the California High Tournament. Jordan Ewert, who was named the tournament's MVP, had 17 kills in the championship match. Jared Stark added eight kills and Derrico Kwa had 28 assists and six blocks. Deer Valley, which also captured tournaments at Dougherty Valley, Granite Bay and San Ramon Valley, entered this week with a 33-1 record.

  • Sacramento Meet of Champions, track and field, April 27, all day -- Some of Northern California's top track and field stars head to the state capital for a prestigious meet.

    Stars of the week

  • Sydney Berry, Heritage track and field -- Berry won three events to help the Patriots girls track and field team beat Liberty in a BVAL dual meet. Berry won the 100 meters (11.9 seconds), the 200 (26.1) and the long jump (16 feet, 11.5 inches).

  • TJ Briggs, Freedom baseball -- Allowed one earned run and had seven strikeouts in 5¿1/3 innings to help lead Freedom to a 7-2 BVAL win over Antioch.

  • Chris Davis, Liberty track and field -- In a dual meet against Heritage, Davis won the long jump and the triple jump. He leaped 20 foot, 7.5 inches in the long jump and 44-10 in the triple jump. Davis also won the triple jump at the Woody Wilson Invitational with a mark of 44-8.

  • Jordan Ewert, Deer Valley volleyball -- Ewert was named the most valuable player of the California High Tournament, as he had 17 kills in the three-game championship match victory over Lowell-San Francisco.

  • Hammed Suleman, California track and field -- The Deer Valley graduate won the triple jump clinched the 119th Big Meet title for Cal over Stanford on April 20. Suleman, a junior, recorded a distance of 51-3.75 and was named the Pac-12 Men's Field Athlete of the Week.
