Record-setting day for Heritage's Kurtz

  • Frank Kurtz of the Heritage High track and field team broke a 16-year-old record in the boys 400 meters at the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 27 at American River College. Making up the stagger by approximately 200 meters, the junior sped to a time of 47.03. Entering the meet, only three high school athletes in the nation had run the event faster, according to DyeStat.com."I definitely tried to go faster in the first 200," Kurtz said.

    Close race shaping up in BVAL baseball

  • The Freedom, Heritage and Liberty baseball teams entered the week tied for first place in the Bay Valley Athletic League with 3-1 records. Heritage beat Freedom 1-0 on April 23 but lost to Antioch 4-2 two days later. Freedom rebounded from that loss to Heritage to beat Liberty 6-1. The Lions had started the BVAL season with wins over Antioch, Deer Valley and Pittsburg.

    Hot Falcons starting to take control

  • The Freedom High softball team has started to separate itself from the pack in the BVAL standings. Entering the week, the Falcons had a 4-0 record in league play with wins over Pittsburg, Antioch, Heritage and Liberty. Freedom senior Lyvie Ilayan is off to strong start in league play, as she is 5 for 14 with five RBIs and six runs scored.

  • Dave Stewart Showdown, baseball, May 4, all day -- De La Salle hosts a great day of baseball at the Oakland Coliseum for another year. The Spartans play Edison-Fresno in the 4 p.m. game.

  • NCS Division I qualifier, boys golf, May 6, all day -- This tournament at Deer Ridge Golf Course is golfers' final chance to qualify for the NCS championships.

  • Dylan Gilfoy, Liberty volleyball -- Had seven kills and seven blocks to lead the Lions to a 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 21-25, 15-10 win over Freedom on April 25.

  • Lyvie Ilayan, Freedom softball -- The senior was a combined 3 for 7 at the plate with four RBIS and five runs scored to lead the Falcons past Heritage 13-4 and Liberty 7-0 in games on April 23 and April 27, respectively.

  • Frank Kurtz, Heritage track and field -- The junior broke a 16-year-old record in the boys 400 meters at the Sacramento Meet of Champions on April 27 at American River College, finishing in 47.03 seconds -- one of the fastest times in the country this year by a high school athlete.

  • Michael Uy, Deer Valley golf -- Uy shot a 1-over 36 at Discovery Bay Country Club on April 25 to lead the Wolverines past Liberty 208-210 in a BVAL match.
