ANTIOCH -- The city is hoping to empty out its animal shelter this weekend.
Antioch Animal Services, through the support of Alameda-based Maddie's Fund, is offering free adoptions in Antioch, Pittsburg and Concord on Saturday and Sunday.
The adoptions will be held at four locations:
To qualify, adopters must complete an application, be 18 years old, show valid photo ID, proof of home ownership or landlord approval, bring family members and current dogs and pass a staff-approved "get acquainted" visit.
If a dog is adopted, Antioch residents must also purchase an $18 license.
More than 200 shelters and rescues in eight U.S. communities are participating in the Maddie's Fund event, which is aimed at increasing awareness of shelter animals, boosting adoptions and supporting animal shelters and rescues.
Maddie's Fund set aside $4 million to provide shelters and rescues with an adoption stipend for each pet adopted. Stipends range from $500 to $ 2,000.
