Oakley's Movies in the Plaza kicks off its summer season this weekend featuring the Dr. Seuss sensation "The Lorax" by Illumination Entertainment. The Saturday night movie offers a chance for children to enjoy an outdoor movie in a park-like setting at the city's Civic Center.
"The Lorax" is one of three movies that will be presented this summer as part of the city of Oakley's warm weather entertainment. Other movies featured over the summer include July 27's presentation of Disney and Pixar's "Brave" and Aug. 10 presentation of "The Sandlot."
"The movies were picked out for family enjoyment," said city of Oakley recreation manager, Lindsey Bruno.
All three movies are rated PG. "The Lorax" and "Brave" attracting a slightly younger crowd, "The Sandlot," hosted by the Oakley Youth Advisory Council, hopes to attract older teens who might be interested in learning more information on the Oakley Youth Council.
The Youth Council is working on developing a short video to premier before "The Sandlot" to introduce their program to the public. The short film clip will work to encourage middle school and high school students from Oakley schools to join their group.
The Youth Council works on various programs and projects throughout the Oakley area. The group works to bring events like "It's a Girl Thing" and "A Boy's Time" and cleanup projects like setting up Creekside Park.
"They are a great group of kids who volunteer their time," Bruno said.
Bruno said that the Movie in the Plaza presentation of "The Lorax" starts at dusk at the park next to the city offices at 3231 Main St. in Oakley. She said people are welcome to bring their own snacks, although some will be available for sale. Lawn space is provided and people are welcome to bring along blankets, chairs or their favorite pillows.
This Saturday the Oakley Library will also be offering a movie, this one for teens. The indoor movie begins at 3 p.m. and features "Oz, the Great and Powerful."
This presentation is only open to teens ages 12 to 17. Pizza and ice cream will be served during the movie. The Oakley Library is at 1050 Neroly Road at Freedom High School. For more information, contact the library 925-625-2400.
