Preparations for the high school football season are still in their early stages, but Freedom High running back Joe Mixon -- the East Bay's most sought-after football recruit this year -- announced Aug. 2 via Twitter that he narrowed his college choices to 10 schools.

They are Tennessee, Oregon, Florida, Texas A&M, Cal, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Ohio St., Oregon St. and Washington.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Mixon, a five-star prospect, holds close to 50 scholarship offers. In 12 games as a junior, he had 201 carries for 1,443 yards and 21 touchdowns. He also caught 18 passes for 383 yards and seven touchdowns. Both Scout and Rivals list Mixon among the nation's top five tailbacks.

Some notable schools not on Mixon's list include USC, UCLA, Georgia, Michigan, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Texas, Florida State and Miami.

High school senior football players cannot sign binding national letters-of-intent until Feb. 5.

Freedom's first regular season game is Aug. 30 at home against Amador Valley.
