ANTIOCH -- Students at an elementary school in Antioch were evacuated on their first day back at school as a fire near the campus burned about a half-acre of vegetation.

The fire began around 12:15 p.m. on the east side of Meadowcreek Park near Vista Grande and Country Hills Drive, a Contra Costa Fire Protection District dispatcher confirmed.

Students at nearby Carmen Dragon Elementary School were evacuated around the same time, a school employee said. No structures were damaged during the fire, and the campus was not seriously threatened, the dispatcher confirmed.

Fire crews had the fire under control by 12:45 p.m., the dispatcher said.

The fire was on the base of a hill, about 50 to 100 yards north of the school. Students cheered members of the fire crews as they went to attack the fire.

No one was injured.
