Tony Costello, who coached East Bay high school and community college basketball for more than 30 years, died Sunday of pancreatic cancer. He was 57.

Costello was hired in 2005 as men's basketball coach at Las Positas College but was forced to take a leave of absence earlier this month. He was also on leave for most of the 2012-13 season.

"He was very thoughtful, very kind," Las Positas athletic director Dyan Miller said. "He will be sorely missed."

Alameda native Matt Bettencourt lost in a playoff at the Cox Classic but still earned his 2013-14 PGA Tour card. Bronson La'Cassie beat Bettencourt with a par on the third extra hole at Champions Run in Omaha, Neb. Both had 4-under 67s for 21-under 263 totals. Bettencourt made $$86,400 to finish 16th on the Web.com Tour money list with $162,877. "It's good to have my card back," he said. The top 25 after the tournament earned PGA Tour cards.

Taylor Uhl scored off a cross from Siobhan Cox in the 34th minute, lifting the No. 2 Stanford women's team (2-0) to a 1-0 win at Connecticut (0-2).
