Pirates win statement game vs. California

  • After a surprising week one loss to Analy, the Pittsburg High football team rebounded with a dramatic win over California, a tough nonleague opponent that is regarded as one of the top teams in the East Bay Athletic League, on Sept. 6. After trailing 14-7, the Pirates put up 28 second-half points and held on for a 35-33 win. The Pirates controlled possession in second half with the run game, as Harris Ross and DeVonte Tarrance combined for 348 yards on the ground and five touchdowns.

    Liberty off to a perfect start

  • The Liberty Lions football team has already matched last season's win total of two with a 48-7 victory over West-Tracy on Sept. 6. Last week, the Lions defeated Concord, 50-30, and are now 2-0 on the season. The Lions have not had a winning season in recent years but are looking to turn that around with second year head coach Jeff Walters at the helm.

    Liberty girls water polo atop BVAL

  • The Liberty girls water polo team improved to 2-0 in the Bay Valley Athletic League with a 15-5 win over Freedom on Sept. 9. The Lions look like an early favorite in the BVAL, with nine upperclassmen returning to the team, including standout senior goalie Stephanie Bergerhouse.

  • Deer Valley vs. College Park, football, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- Coming off a convincing victory last week, the Wolverines travel to Pleasant Hill to face College Park (1-0-1) at Diablo Valley College.

  • Pittsburg at Monte Vista, football, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- The Pirates travel to Danville to face the Mustangs. After disappointing losses in week one, both teams responded with wins in week two.

  • Hayward at Liberty, football, Sept. 13, 7 p.m. -- Liberty (2-0) is off to their best start in years and hopes to improve to 3-0 against a struggling Hayward team (0-2).

  • Heritage 'Play for the Cure' Tournament, tennis, Sept. 13-14, 5:30 p.m. -- Heritage had singles and doubles finalists in the Freedom Invitational on Sept. 6-7.

    Stars of the week

  • Lindsey Heaney, Liberty, water polo -- Heaney led the Lions in scoring (5) in a 15-5 victory over Freedom on Sept. 9. In four games this season, Heaney has scored 19 goals.

  • Alex Hull, Liberty, football -- Hull sparked the Lions offense with a 49-yard touchdown catch and an 89-yard punt return against West-Tracy. Throughout the game, Hull showed off his speed and illusiveness, racking up 208 return yards on three punt returns.

  • Harris Ross, Pittsburg, football -- Ross piled up a game-high 282 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns, three in the second half, in a key early-season victory over California.
