Pittsburg defense shuts down Berkeley The Pittsburg High football team improved to 3-1 and showed that its defense can be just as impressive as its offense after shutting out Berkeley 24-0 on Sept. 20. The Pirates' defense forced two fumbles and gave up just 189 yards of total offense to the Yellowjackets, who committed 12 penalties.

Freedom rallies for a much-needed win The Freedom football team played a strong second half to come from behind and defeat San Leandro 27-21 on Sept. 20. After three consecutive losses, the Falcons outscored and shutout the Pirates 8-0 in the second half. Sophomore quarterback Joe Sweeney completed just 4 of his 13 pass attempts, but came through with the go-ahead 16 yard touchdown to tight end James Allen when it counted.

Liberty wins tight one against Castro Valley On Sept. 20, the Liberty football team defeated Castro Valley 28-21 and improved to 2-2 on the season. Running backs Ivan Oseguera and Alex Espinoza combined for three touchdowns and 171 yards on the ground. The Lions will face another scrappy opponent when they host Oakland Tech on Sept. 27 in the last week of nonleague play.

On deck Granite Bay at Pittsburg, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- Pittsburg faces a big test when they host a stout opponent in Granite Bay (2-1). Both teams have potent offenses that average more than 30 points a game. Castro Valley at Freedom, football, Sept. 27, 7 p.m. -- The Falcons will try to win their second in a row as they host the Trojans in their least nonleague game. Both teams are 1-3 this season. Stanford Invitational, cross country, Sept. 28, noon -- Elite runners will head to Palo Alto for this prestigious meet. Monterey at Los Medanos, football, Sept. 28, 1 p.m. -- After a 55-24 loss at Sequoias on Sept. 21, Los Medanos (1-2) hopes to get back to .500 against Monterey (0-2). Freedom Tournament, girls golf, Sept. 30, TBA -- Freedom hosts some of the top teams in the area at Deer Ridge Golf Course.
Stars of the week Joe Mixon, Freedom, football -- Mixon had one of his biggest games of the season, as he scored three touchdowns and racked up 210 yards on 18 carries in a 27-21 win over San Leandro. Harris Ross, Pittsburg, football -- Ross handled the bulk of the offense, racking up 191 yards and one touchdown in a 24-0 win over Berkeley. In the past three games, Ross averaged over 11 yards a carry and has 888 yards on 76 carries. Ivan Oseguera, Libery, football -- Oseguera racked up 222 total yards and one touchdown in a big win over Castro Valley on Sept. 20.
