Deer Valley still undefeated

  • The Deer Valley High football team escaped with a 36-34 win over San Leandro on Sept. 27. The Wolverines (4-0) trailed with less than five minutes to play, when Nzuzi Webster came up with a momentum changing interception. His twin brother and quarterback Nsimba Webster took over and broke off an 80-yard touchdown run to tie the game. Nsimba Webster ran in the two-point conversion and the Wolverines held on for their fourth consecutive win.

    Heritage clinches BVAL title

  • On Sept. 26, the Heritage girls golf team clinched the Bay Valley Athletic League title, and improved to 8-0, after defeating Liberty at Deer Ridge Golf Course by a score of 206-257. Heritage dominated Liberty (5-2), who owns the second best record in BVAL play, and all five of their golfers finished with the top five scores.

    Mustangs offense starting to click

  • After getting blown out 55-24 against College of the Sequoias, the Los Medanos football team responded with a much-needed 34-17 win over Monterey Peninsula on Sept. 28. The Mustangs improved to 2-2 on the season thanks to a stout defense that forced three fumbles and held Monterey to just 51 yards rushing. The Mustangs offense was led by Shawn Vasquez and Jamal Lockett who combined for 314 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

  • West Valley at Los Medanos, football, Oct. 5, 1 p.m. -- The Mustangs hope to improve their 2-2 record when they host a struggling West Valley (1-3).

  • Antioch at Liberty, football, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. -- After forfeiting their first two wins, Liberty has won three consecutive games and looks to make it four in a row when it hosts a struggling Antioch team.

  • Freedom at Deer Valley, football, Oct. 11, 7 p.m. -- Freedom (2-3) hopes to improve its season record to .500 and will be coming off of a week's rest when it faces Deer Valley in the first game of Bay Valley Athletic League play.

  • Shawn Vasquez, Los Medanos, football -- Vasquez ran for 189 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-17 win over Monterey Peninsula. On the season, Vasquez has rushed for 586 yards and six touchdowns.

  • Nsimba Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster scored three touchdowns and ran in the game-winning two-point conversion in a 36-34 win over San Leandro.

  • Nzuzi Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster was a factor on defense, recording an interception and blocking two field goal attempts in the Wolverines' come-from-behind victory over San Leandro.
