Deer Valley remains undefeated

  • On Oct. 11, the Deer Valley High football team rolled over Freedom 35-7 to improve to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the Bay Valley Athletic League. Deer Valley's defense held star running back Joe Mixon to just 74 yards on 14 carries. Wolverines quarterback Nsimba Webster ran for 139 yards and two touchdowns, and passed for 188 yards in the win.

    Field goal helps Pirates top Patriots

  • Antonio Saldana kicked a 35-yard field goal with 18.4 seconds left as Pittsburg beat Heritage 10-7 on Oct. 11 in the BVAL opener for both teams. On its final drive, Pittsburg took over midway through the fourth quarter and drove 41 yards on 10 plays, capped by Saldana's field goal.

    Heritage takes over first in BVAL

  • The Heritage girls volleyball team took over sole possession of first place in the BVAL with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 win over host Liberty on Oct. 10. Junior setter Heather Reed had 27 assists, four kills and three aces and senior opposite hitter Brileigh Boyce had seven kills and five digs. The win moved the Patriots to 11-5 overall and 2-0 in league play, with three teams, including Liberty, tied for second place with 1-1 records.

  • Pittsburg at Liberty, football, Oct. 18, 7 p.m. -- The Lions host the Pirates in a game between teams with 4-2 overall records and 1-0 marks in the BVAL.

  • Freedom at Heritage, football, Oct. 18, 7 p.m. -- After a tough loss to Deer Valley, Freedom looks to respond against Heritage.

  • Los Medanos at Shasta, football, Oct. 19, 6 p.m. -- Los Medanos (3-2) will shoot for its third consecutive win when it travel to Shasta (2-3) for the first game of Bay Valley Conference play.

  • Deer Valley at Liberty, girls water polo, Oct. 24, 4 p.m. -- The Wolverines travel to Brentwood to take on the Lions in a game that should decide first place in the BVAL. Entering this week, Deer Valley was 6-0 in league play and Liberty was 5-1.

  • Alex Hull, Liberty, football -- Hull caught five passes for 121 yards, including touchdown receptions of 24, 26 and 37 yards in the Lions 41-28 victory over Antioch.

  • Heather Reed, Heritage, volleyball -- The junior setter had 27 assists, four kills and three aces to lead the Patriots to a 25-20, 25-16, 25-22 win over host Liberty on Oct. 10.
