Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Pelton both picked up two individual wins -- including a pool record from Pelton in the 200-yard backstroke -- and Cal took a 135-108 lead over Florida after Day 1 of a two-day women's swim meet Saturday.

The teams will compete again Sunday for 11 more races, starting at 9 a.m. at Spieker Aquatics Complex.

Franklin won the 200 freestyle handily in 1 minute, 45.19 seconds. She also dominated the 500 freestyle in 4:45.40.

Pelton (1:57.48) edged teammate Celina Li (1:58.18) in the 200 individual medley. In the 200 back, Pelton finished in 1:53.94, almost six seconds in front. She broke her own pool record of 1:53.99.

Li (Foothill High) won the 200 butterfly in 1:57.98.

Franklin and Pelton were part of Cal's victorious 400 medley relay team.

  • The Saint Mary's volleyball team (11-6, 7-2 WCC) rallied from five points down in the fifth set to beat host Santa Clara (7-10, 2-6). Kristina Graven found the corner with her 30th kill to end a 25-16, 17-25, 25-20, 15-25, 17-15 victory.

  • The No. 4 Stanford men's water polo team (11-4, 1-1 MPSF) posted an 8-5 home win second-ranked UCLA (18-2, 0-1). Cardinal goalie Drew Holland (Miramonte High) made 11 saves.

    Rowing

    Kathleen Bertko of Oakland took the women's championship singles at the Head of the Charles regatta. She finished in 18:33:015 over the three-mile course on the Charles River (Mass.).
