BRENTWOOD -- One official of the National Barrel Horse Association will have to kiss a pink pig to support breast cancer this weekend at the 2013 Barrel Bash and Halloween and Rider Costume Parade at the Rafter D Ranch.

The group started the innovative fundraising idea earlier this year by collecting funds at several of their competitions.

At this Sunday's event, the final total for the fundraiser will be counted and the one of two NBHA officials will be presented a ceremonial pig to give a wet one on the lips. All the monies the group has collected in the name of kissing the pig, plus half the proceeds to the "get your hat back" as well as $1 from all entries that wear pink will be donated to the Cancer Support Community in Walnut Creek.

"Since it is also Spinal Bifida Awareness Month, we are also hosting a silent auction for a special quilt one of our members made and donating half of the funds to that organization, plus the other half to the breast cancer fund," said Connie Colen, one of the organizers of the event.

The event will also include a silent auction with prizes donated from local businesses and a bake sale. Contestants and their families are encouraged to come in costume. All the monies raised for these activities will go to the association.

"The local businesses have been very generous with their donations," Colen said.

Those interested in competing in the event still have a chance to enter the competition up until the day of the event. The entrance fees vary. Competitions for the event are open to pee wees, ages 7 and under; youth, ages 18 and under; and seniors, ages 55 and over. Ages 19 and up can compete in the open category.

"We also have a novice event for those who have not won more than $200 in a barrel race before," Colen said.

There are cash prizes for the winning horsemen in the open category. There are also buckle prizes for the open and youth divisions.

The event, open to the public, starts at 8:30 a.m. with Barrel Bash activities, vendors and more.

The event is co-sanctioned by the NBHA and the American Computer Barrel Racing Association, which means that this is a points events for the professional competitors.

Rafter D Ranch is at 8400 Bryon Highway, Brentwood, close to Delta Road. For more information and updates, check out the NBHA's Facebook page at www.facebook/NBHA08bash or their website at www.nbhaca08.com.
