Heritage rolling over BVAL After a second-round exit in the NCS Division I tournament last season, the Heritage girls volleyball team looks poised to make another run at the title. Heritage reached the finals in the Northgate Tournament on Oct. 26 and is currently on top of the Bay Valley Athletic League standings with a 22-8 overall, 6-0 BVAL record. The Patriots are undefeated in league play and haven't lost a BVAL match since Liberty defeated them on Oct. 25, 2012.

Pirates win again with ground game The Pittsburg football team showed why it is one of the top teams in the East Bay, defeating a scrappy Freedom team 34-13 on Oct. 25. Pittsburg's defense held star running back Joe Mixon to just 74 yards while the Pirates' Harris Ross exploded for 272 yards and three touchdowns, as well as three school records.

Patriots wrap up BVAL title The Heritage girls tennis team wrapped up the league title with a 7-2 win over Pittsburg on Oct. 22. The Patriots dominated the BVAL this season, going a perfect 10-0 in league play, including four 9-0 sweeps over league opponents. The squad will now sets its sights on the NCS Division I tournament, which begins on Nov. 12.

On deck Deer Valley at Pittsburg, football, Nov. 1, 7 p.m. -- The Pirates (6-2, 3-0 BVAL) host the undefeated Wolverines (8-0, 3-0) as the top two teams in the BVAL battle it out for first place. Los Medanos at Redwoods, football, Nov. 2, 7 p.m. -- Los Medanos looks to carry the momentum of a late come-from-behind win over Mendocino into another Bay Valley Conference match against . Northern California championships, girls golf, Nov. 4, 8 a.m. -- The top high school girls in all of Northern California compete for the title at Ripon Golf and Country Club.
Stars of the week Harris Ross, Pittsburg, football -- Ross was named U.S. Army All-American Bowl High School Player of the Week after rushing for 272 yard and three touchdowns in Pittsburg's 34-13 win over Freedom on Oct. 25. Ross broke the single-season rushing total and also broke the school record for career rushing yards and touchdowns, which was previously held by Ken Simonton, who is now the running backs coach at Pittsburg. Shawn Vasquez, Los Medanos, football -- Vasquez broke six tackles on the way to a 58-yard game-winning touchdown against Mendocino. Los Medanos (4-3, 1-1 BVC) scored 27 points in the fourth quarter in a 40-37 come-from-behind win over Mendocino on Oct. 26.
