ANTIOCH -- An Antioch man attacked two library employees and a library visitor before taking money from one of the victims Thursday afternoon, police said.

Kenneth Johnson, 21, was arrested on suspicion of felony assault and robbery when police detained him during a traffic stop after witnesses called in the attack and told dispatchers Johnson fled in a blue van.

Around 2:49 p.m., police responded to the Antioch Community Center, where Johnson, without warning or provocation, allegedly beat two library employees and then a bystander who tried to intervene, according to Antioch Lt. Tammany Brooks.

Both librarians were transported to an area hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. The bystander was treated at the library.

During an area check following the assault, officers saw the van driving northbound on Lone Tree Way. After a brief confrontation Johnson was taken into custody, Brooks said.

He was later transported to County Jail in Martinez and is being held in lieu of $150,000.

The motive for the assaults is under investigation. None of the victims knew Johnson or had any contact with him prior to the alleged attack.
