Pirates win BVAL title with 5-0 record The Pittsburg High football team won the Bay Valley Athletic League title with a 5-0 record after defeating Antioch 19-0 on Nov. 8. The Pittsburg offense started slowly, but the Pirates' tenacious defense kept Antioch off the scoreboard. In the second half, Pittsburg's running game wore down the Antioch defense, and running back Jaylyn Morgan finished with 257 yards and three touchdowns, running behind a stout offensive line. Pittsburg (8-2) will host Irvington (5-5) on Nov. 15 in the first round of the North Coast Section Division I playoffs.

Deer Valley gears up for playoffs after win The Deer Valley football team closed the BVAL season with a 31-20 win over Heritage on Nov. 8. Brothers Nsimba and Nzuzi Webster provided most of the offense, combining for three touchdowns and 281 yards on the ground. Deer Valley (9-1) will face Castro Valley (4-6) in the first round of the NCS playoffs on Nov. 15.

On deck Liberty at James Logan, football, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. -- The Lions (5-5) will play in their first playoff game since 2003 against the Colts (8-2), the Division I runner-up in last year, in the first round of the NCS Division I playffs. Irvington vs. Pittsburg, football, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. -- The red-hot Pirates will host the Vikings, who are coming off a 40-34 loss against Washington, in the first round of the Division I playoffs. Deer Valley vs. Castro Valley, football, Nov. 15, 7 p.m. -- Deer Valley's (9-1), the BVAL runner-up, will look to slow down down Castro Valley (4-6), which has scored more than 40 points in seven games.
Stars of the week Malik Hutchings, Deer Valley, football -- Hutchings recorded a game-high 11 tackles in Deer Valley's 31-20 win over Heritage on Nov. 8. Hutchings racked up 112 total tackles during the regular season. Aaron Mullins, Freedom, football -- Mullins had an interception and caused two interceptions by deflecting passes in the Falcons' 30-6 win over Liberty on Nov. 8. Jaylyn Morgan, Pittsburg, football -- Morgan ran for 257 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries in Pittsburg's 19-0 win over Antioch. Shawn Vasquez, Los Medanos, football -- Vasquez led Los Medanos to a 25-10 victory over Yuba on Nov. 9. Vasquez ran for a game-high 195 yards on 25 carries and also scored on runs of 60, 14 and 6 yards. Nzuzi Webster, Deer Valley, football -- Webster had 73 yards rushing, returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown, made eight tackles and deflected two passes in Deer Valley's win over Heritage.
