Freedom captures RG Invitational

  • The Freedom High boys basketball team defeated Montgomery-Santa Rosa 64-49 in the championship of its own RG Invitational on Dec. 21. Elliot Smith was named the tournament's MVP, as he had 18 points, including three 3-pointers, in the win over Montgomery. In other games in the tournament, Freedom defeated Laguna Creek 69-51 and Castlemont 70-29.

    Mustangs take third in Santa Rosa

  • The Los Medanos College men's basketball team took third place in the Santa Rosa Junior College Tournament with a 86-75 win over Marin on Dec. 21. Patrick Lefiti had 24 points against Marin, as the Mustangs improved to 9-2 on the season. Andrew Cones was an all-tournament selection for LMC.

    Antioch basketball on upswing

  • The Antioch girls basketball team appears to have things going in the right direction. The Panthers defeated El Molino 61-25 in the consolation championship of the McKinleyville Lady Panther Classic on Dec. 21, as they raced out to a big lead at halftime and never looked back. Tumni DaSilva had 20 points in the win, which improved Antioch's record to 5-7 after it had four wins all of last season. DaSilva and Amari Coleman were both named to the all-tournament team.

    Deer Valley shines at Tri-Valley Classic

  • The Deer Valley girls soccer team improved to 3-3-1 with a 1-0 shutout over Miramonte at the Tri-Valley Classic on Dec. 20. Coming into the game the Matadors were previously unbeaten with a 3-0-1 record. Senior team captain Jessica Siemens scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute of the first half.

    Consolation for Heritage basketball

  • The Heritage boys basketball team captured the consolation championship of the Don Nelson Classic with a 74-64 win over Clayton Valley Charter on Dec. 21. Shon Briggs led the Patriots with 20 points, 14 rebounds and six assists. Aaron Berry added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four steals for Heritage, which outscored Clayton Valley 42-27 in the second half to improve it record this season to 6-3.

  • West Coast Jamboree, girls basketball, Dec. 27-30, times TBA -- One of the biggest girls basketball tournaments in the country returns to Contra Costa County. The premier Platinum Division will be held at Las Positas College in Livermore.

  • MaxPreps Holiday Classic, boys basketball, Dec. 26-30, times TBA -- De La Salle will be competing in the prestigious four-day tournament in Palm Springs.

  • Liberty at College Park, girls soccer, Dec. 30, 3 p.m. -- The Falcons will try to stay sharp during winter break with a nonleague game against the Lions.

  • Tumni DaSilva, Antioch girls basketball -- Scored 20 points for the Panthers in their 61-25 win over El Molino at the McKinleyville Lady Panther Classic.

  • Patrick Lefiti, Los Medanos men's basketball -- Lefiti finished with 24 points, five rebounds and six assists to lead the Mustangs past Marin in the third place game of the Santa Rosa Junior College Tournament.

  • Elliot Smith, Freedom boys basketball -- Smith earned MVP honors at the Falcons' RG Invitational, scoring 18 points for Freedom in its 64-49 win over Montgomery in the championship game.
