Mixon MVP of Army All-American Bowl

  • Joe Mixon of the Freedom High football team played for the West team in the US Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. During the game, Mixon hauled in a 26-yard catch and carried the ball once, a 3-yard touchdown late the second quarter. The West team defeated the East 28-6. Mixon also announced he will attend the University of Oklahoma.

    Pirates stun Grizzlies

  • After trailing California for the first three quarters, the Pittsburg boys basketball team outscored the visitors 23-14 in the fourth quarter and defeated the Grizzlies 60-54. With the victory, the Pirates (11-3) improved their win streak to seven and are now 6-0 at home.

    Lions offense roaring

  • The Liberty boys basketball team ripped off nine wins in its last 11 games and look to carry that momentum into Bay Valley Athletic League play, which starts Jan. 17. In the consolation final at the Monta Vista Tournament, the Lions (10-4) narrowly defeated Harker-San Jose (7-3) 54-53.

    Freedom hopes to keep strong play going

  • After two consecutive seasons with at least 20 wins, the Freedom (10-4) boys basketball team is in good shape to make it three in a row. On Jan. 3, the Falcons notched a 58-55 overtime victory over Montgomery-Santa Rosa.

  • Heritage at Dixon, boys basketball, Jan. 10, 7 p.m. -- After losing four consecutive games, Heritage (7-7) hopes right the ship against Dixon (2-9) before its first Bay Valley Athletic League game against Liberty on Jan. 17.

  • Liberty at Lincoln-Stockton, girls basketball, Jan. 11, 3 p.m. -- Liberty (9-5) looks to carry the momentum of three consecutive wins at the Dons Holiday Classic into its final nonleague contest against Lincoln (5-3).

  • Freedom at Pittsburg, boys basketball, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- Two of the top teams in the BVAL square off in the first game of league play.

  • Danny Comforti, Heritage, boys water polo -- The Junior field player was named to the second team of the 2013 East bay-North Bay Division I team.

  • Maranne Johnson, Deer Valley, girls basketball -- Johnson led all scorer's with 25 points to go along with eight rebounds in Deer Valley's 78-52 win over Skyline on Jan. 4.

  • Nathan Mallett, Freedom, boys basketball -- Mallett hit three 3-pointers and scored 20 points in Freedom's 58-55 win over Montgomery.

  • Crysta Ray, Pittsburg, girls basketball -- Ray scored a game-high 23 points on 7 of 8 shooting from floor and also pulled down 8 rebounds and dished out five assists in Pittsburg's 85-61 win over Vacaville at the Power of One Classic on Jan. 4.
