Pittsburg win streak reaches three

  • The Pittsburg High girls basketball team strung together its third consecutive win with a 56-53 victory over Lincoln-Stockton on Jan. 10. The Pirates (11-4) have gotten off to a strong start in nonleague play and will next gear up for their first Bay Valley Athletic League game against Freedom on Jan. 17.

    Liberty takes care of Enochs-Modesto

  • On Jan. 9, the Liberty boys basketball team traveled to Enochs-Modesto (4-11) and earned a 76-28 win. Liberty (12-4) has had early success in its nonleague schedule and will head into BVAL play having won six out of its last seven contests.

    Pirates rolling over competition

  • The Pittsburg boys basketball team beat American Canyon 61-51 on Jan. 7 and goes into BVAL play this week winners of eight straight games. The Pirates open league play at home against Freedom on Jan. 17.

  • Freedom at Pittsburg, boys basketball, Jan. 17, 5:30 p.m. -- Pittsburg (12-3) will have its biggest test of the early season when it hosts Freedom (11-4) in both teams first BVAL game.

  • Heritage at Liberty, girls basketball, Jan. 17, 7 p.m. -- Liberty (9-6) has won its last three of four nonleague contests and will next host rival Heritage (5-6) to kickoff BVAL play.

  • Literacy Classic All-Star game, football, Jan. 18, 7 p.m. -- The top high school seniors from the East Bay will take on the best from the South and West Bay at San Jose City College to raise money for a literacy program.

  • Los Medanos at Alameda, men's basketball, Jan. 18, 7:30 p.m. -- Los Medanos (10-5, 1-3 Bay Valley Conference) looks to take advantage of a struggling opponent when it travel to College of Alameda (0-12, 0-4) for a conference game.

    Stars of the week

  • Nathan Mallett, Freedom, boys basketball -- Mallett led Freedom to an important 58-55 win on the road over a strong Montgomery squad on Jan. 3. Mallett scored a game-high 20 points, including three 3-pointers.

  • Logan Rodgers, Liberty, boys basketball -- Rodgers was seven of 11 from the floor and had a team-high 18 points in Liberty's 65-63 nonleague win at Oakland Tech on Jan. 7.

  • Ashari Shakir, Pittsburg, girls basketball -- Shakir was dominant on the glass in Pittsburg's 56-53 win over Lincoln-Stockton. She pulled down 11 rebounds, to go along with her eight points and five steals.

  • Makenzie Cast, Carondelet basketball -- The LMU-bound senior scored 22 points and hit five 3-pointers in a 79-51 win over South Bay rival Archbishop Mitty-San Jose on Jan. 11.
