Heritage boys team upsets Liberty

  • The Heritage High boys basketball team started off Bay Valley Athletic League play on Jan. 17 with a thrilling 58-51 overtime victory over Liberty. Heading into the fourth quarter, host Liberty held a 10-point lead, but late in the game, Heritage's Joseph Worku and Shonn Briggs took over and combined for 19 points to seal the upset for the Patriots.

    Deer Valley atop of BVAL standings

  • The Deer Valley girls soccer team took sole possession of first place in the BVAL standings with a 1-0 win over Heritage on Jan. 16. Gaby Rodriguez scored the lone goal in the 59th minute. In their 11 games played at press time, the Wolverines (7-3-1, 2-0 BVAL) have outscored opponents by a combined total of 32-12.

    Wolverines continue strong start

  • Sierra Dixon scored 18 points, including two 3-pointers, and Maranne Johnson added 16 points to lead the Deer Valley girls basketball team to a 70-48 win over Oakland Tech at the MLK Shootout at Pittsburg High on Jan. 18. Deer Valley trailed by three points at halftime but outscored Oakland Tech 24-9 in the third quarter to take control. The Wolverines have now won four straight, and host Pittsburg on Jan. 24.

    Liberty gets first BVAL win

  • The Liberty girls soccer team scored in the sixth minute and never looked back in a 4-0 win over Antioch on Jan. 16. The Lions, who improved to 5-2-4 overall and 1-1 in the BVAL with the victory, also scored in the 38th minute and added two goals in the first 20 minutes of the second half. The Lions had lost 2-1 to Heritage on Jan. 14.

  • Liberty at Freedom, boys basketball, Jan. 24, 7 p.m. -- Liberty hopes to rebound after a tough loss to Heritage, while Freedom looks to improve to 2-0 in BVAL play.

  • Pittsburg at Deer Valley, girls basketball, Jan. 24, 7 p.m. -- The Wolverines will try to extend their winning streak to five games when they host the Pirates in a key early-season BVAL clash.

  • Gaby Rodriguez, Deer Valley girls soccer -- Rodriguez scored the lone goal in the 59th minute to lift the Wolverines past Heritage and improve their league record to 2-0.

  • Joseph Worku, Heritage boys basketball -- In his first game after transferring from Mills High School, senior Joseph Worku led Heritage to a 58-51 upset over Liberty. Worku scored 13 of his game-high 33 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.
