Quarter million land deal closed: One of the largest land deals of recent years in Diablo Valley was received Tuesday when deeds were recorded in Martinez in the sale of 190 acres of land of the Garin Company on Walnut Boulevard to seven buyers, some local people, others from far away. The deal was handled by Tom Broderick of Curtis and Broderick, an Antioch Realty firm, and revenue stamps on stamps on the instruments indicate a $250,000 transaction. The land is in apricots, peaches and some plums. According to Broderick, several of the purchasers plan early improvements on their holdings, and this is regarded as a forward step in further development of the Brentwood area.

Boys and Girls Club gets grant for weight lifting equipment: The Boys and Girls Club of East County will have a youth weightlifting program when its new building finally opens, thanks to a grant from the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
The San Francisco-based organization this month approved a $2,500 grant for the club. It's the third the club has received form the group, said club Executive Director Marge Rognlien.
The club, which hopes to begin activities this year in its still unfinished headquarters on Stoneman Avenue, has no weightlifting program now.
"It's great because the weightlifting equipment will give us the opportunity to add a new dimension to our program," Rognlien said.
The club's program supervisor, Brett McNamar, is a former All-American wrestler, so the club won't need to hire a weightlifting instructor, she said.
The grant, from the hall of fame's Youth Fund Grant Committee, will be present during the Feb. 7 ceremony in San Francisco.
Meanwhile, county supervisors are set to consider giving final approval for a $200,000 grant for the club. The money would partially complete the new building, possibly allowing limited activities there.
