Pittsburg basketball remains on a roll

  • The Pittsburg High boys basketball team remained in the hunt for the Bay Valley Athletic League title as it entered the week on a five-game win streak. The Pirates beat Heritage 74-65 on Feb. 13 to improve to 19-5 overall and 6-2 in the BVAL, one game back of league-leading Freedom with two games to play. Three players scored in double figures for the Pirates against Heritage, including Daniel Gonzales with 26 points and D.J. Kennedy with 20.

    Deer Valley clinches share of BVAL title

  • The Deer Valley girls basketball team clinched at least a share of the BVAL championship on Feb. 13 with a 66-22 win over Freedom. It's the fifth league title in six years for the Wolverines, who looked to win the league championship outright with a victory over Liberty on Feb. 18, after this newspaper went to press. Maranne Johnson had 12 points for Deer Valley in a balanced scoring attack.

    Liberty wins BVAL championship

  • The Liberty girls soccer team clinched the BVAL championship with a 3-0 win over Pittsburg on Feb. 11 and 0-0 tie with Freedom on Feb. 13. Liberty finished the regular season with a 6-1-3 record in the BVAL, as it wound up one point ahead of both Heritage and Deer Valley for first place. It's Liberty's first BVAL title since 2010. The Lions entered the North Coast Section Division I playoffs as the No. 6 seed with a 10-2-7 overall record. The Lions hosted No. 11 James Logan (12-5-3) in the first round on Feb. 19, after this newspaper went to press. Also on Feb. 19, No. 8 Freedom hosted No. 9 Granada, No. 7 Deer Valley hosted No. 10 California and No. 16 Heritage played at No. 1 Monte Vista.

  • BVAL tournament, wrestling, Feb. 21, TBA -- Pittsburg High hosts one of the better league wrestling tournaments in the East Bay as the BVAL's best aim for league championships and spots in next week's NCS championships.

  • NCS playoffs, soccer, Feb. 22 -- Quarterfinal matches in the boys and girls divisions will be played at home site of the highest seeded team in each pairing.

  • NCS seeding meeting, basketball, Feb. 23 -- Playoff brackets will be released in boys and girls basketball on the North Coast Section website (www.cifncs.org).

  • Daniel Gonzales, Pittsburg boys basketball -- Gonzales scored 26 points to help lead the Pirates to a 74-65 win over Heritage on Feb. 13.

  • Miriam Issa, Deer Valley girls soccer -- Issa had a hat-trick, scoring all three of her team's goals in the second half in a 3-1 win over Pittsburg on Feb. 13.

  • Ashari Shakir, Pittsburg girls basketball -- Shakir, a junior center, scored 20 points to lead the Pirates to a 57-32 win over Heritage on Feb. 13.
