Delta Animals Safe Haven will hold a Volunteer Orientation Workshop noon to 3 p.m. Saturday at Melo's Pizza & Pasta, 6580 Lone Tree Way. The workshop will cover topics such as helping at adoptions, administrative assistance, fostering, help with taking photos and videos, pet food distribution to low income families, feline program manager duties and much more.

Relay for Life event to kick off walk-a-thons

A kickoff event for upcoming Relay for Life fundraising walks will take PLACE later this month at the Pittsburg Elk Lodge.

The event is a prelude to four American Cancer Society Relay for Life fundraising scheduled in Oakley on May 17-18 at Freedom High School; in Brentwood on June 21-22 at Liberty High School; in Antioch on June 21-22 at Deer Valley High School; and in Pittsburg on July 19-20 at the Civic Center.

The March 26 kickoff event starts at 6 p.m, AND will feature information about the upcoming walks along with dinner, entertainment and a chance to win prizes.

Applications available for scholarships that honor local teens

Applications are being accepted for the Bobby Rogers and Tiffany Walters memorial scholarships.

The scholarships were established in September 2012 to honor Bobby Rogers and classmate Tiffany Walters, two teens who were killed in car crash in the foothills near Boise, Idaho. The two teens were not wearing seatbelts.

To be eligible for one of the eight $500 Buckle Up for Bobby scholarships, students must complete an Alive at 25 safe driving class offered by police officers.

A March 29 class is being offered from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Los Medanos College, 2700 E. Leland Road, Pittsburg.

Pittsburg team's story told at film festival

"Thrown for a Loss: The Story of the 1963 Pittsburg Mallards" is among the films that will be shown at the Oakland International Film Festival in April.

The 49-minute documentary, which tells the story of the team that was supposed to have a pre-championship game breakfast with President John F. Kennedy but instead attended his funeral after he was assassinated, premiered last year at the California Theatre in Pittsburg.

It is among a group of six films that will be shown April 4 from 3 to 5:30 p.m. at the Bal Theatre in San Leandro, 14808 E. 14th St.
