BRENTWOOD -- The newest store in the Streets of Brentwood isn't another run of the mill clothing store; in fact, no clothing will be sold there at all. Instead, gazing through the windows and meandering through the shop is sure to bring a breath of fresh air to both the art aficionado and novice enthusiast alike.
This weekend marks the grand opening of The Delta Gallery of the Arts, with more than 4,400-square-feet of exhibit space, which will feature the exhibit and sale of fine art from both local and regional artists in four distinct gallery spaces.
As you enter the store front, Delta Gallery owner Jack Gaughan explained that the "main gallery is for our high-achieving, more professional artists that are both nationally or regionally recognized."
Gaughan, who owns the shop with his wife, Betty, said he was fortunate to be able to secure Marin County ceramic artists Bill Abright and Claudia Tarantino as headliners for the grand opening.
Both Abright and Tarantino are known nationally for their work, with many of their pieces finding homes in private collections and museums.
"We're going to bring in ceramic pieces primarily," said Abright of the work the duo will be showing. "I have some large drawings as well."
Abright described his art as abstract figurative work.
"I think what is distinctive about my style is that I construct, and then deconstruct, than reconstruct all the parts until they have strong interior space as well as an exterior form and I color them with acrylic paints primarily," Abright said.
But, for the most part Abright said, "Most of them are deconstructed conglomerations of pottery forms that end up making figurative sculpture in the form of birds and figures."
Gaughan explained Tarantino's work as "wonderful trompe l' oeil porcelain things ... they look like the real things, but they're ceramic."
Gaughan anticipates that about 10 times a year the front gallery will feature a new headliner artist.
The center gallery is set aside for the works of the Art Guild of the Delta, which will display its members' work, rotating in new artists about every two months.
The Art Guild of the Delta is a membership organization consisting of 72 local artists, Gaughan said. "They range in a lot of different things that they do."
As you wander through the gallery housing The Art Guild of the Delta's work to the back of the store, you'll find the third gallery. This gallery will be devoted each month to displaying a one or two person show. This month it will feature two local artists, ceramic artist Rosalinda Grejsen and watercolorist Sherry Cummings.
The final gallery will host nonguild artists, who have just one or two pieces of art to display, but it will also be used as the Delta Gallery's community room. Gaughan said it is this area that will house all the action, such as open mic, writing symposiums, drama and art classes, guest speakers and meetings.
The Delta Gallery of the Arts invites the public to join it at its grand opening festivities, which begin at 5 p.m. on Friday. The Delta Gallery of the Arts is at 2485 Sand Creek Road, Suite 128, in Brentwood.
