Wolverines are perfect again The Deer Valley boys volleyball team swept the competition and won the title at the Pleasant Valley Invitational, finishing another tournament without dropping a set. The Wolverines (20-1) defeated Pleasant Valley, Chico, Vista del Lago-Folsom, Seaside, Antelope, Bear River-Grass Valley and Placer-Auburn 25-15, 25-21 in the championship game on April 12. Jared Stark, Jacob Brannon and Jacob Evans were all named to the all-tournament team.

LMC is gaining momentum In two Bay Valley Conference wins the Los Medanos baseball team put up 20 runs and held Mendocino to five. The Mustangs (18-12, 9-6 BVC) defeated Mendocino 14-5 on April 10 and had a 6-0 shutout victory over the Eagles on April 12. Leadoff hitter Chaz Meadows continued to ignite the offense during the two wins, collecting six hits and scoring six runs, while Ben Polansky pitched a complete game shutout with six strikeouts.

Heritage increases win streak to seven On April 10, the Heritage baseball team traveled to Lafayette and defeated Acalanes 4-3 to bump up its win streak to seven games. Heritage (9-5) also defeated Prospect 3-0 on April 8 after winning all three of their games at the Willie Stargell Classic in the previous week.

On deck Laney at Los Medanos, baseball, April 22, 7 p.m. -- In the last three-game series of BVC play, the Mustangs will host Laney (15-15, 6-9 BVC) in their first of three. Deer Valley at Foothill Invitational, volleyball, April 22, TBA -- After winning their last two tournaments, the Wolverines will look for their third consecutive at the Foothill Invitational.
Stars of the week Savannah Borrego, Freedom, softball -- Borrego earned the win and was dominant in a 3-0 shutout over Dougherty Valley. In seven innings of work, Borrego faced four over the minimum (25 batters), struck out five, and had no walks. Marissa Gasca, Freedom, softball -- Gasca hit her first home run of the season and was a perfect 3 for 3 including three runs and three RBI in an 8-4 victory over St. Mary's at home. Jared Stark, Deer Valley, volleyball -- Stark led Deer Valley to another Pleasant Valley Invitational title and was named tournament MVP. Emily To'o, Freedom, swimming -- Last week, To'o signed her letter of intent to BYU and in doing so became the first female swimmer from Freedom to receive a scholarship. During her three years on the varsity squad To'o was named to All-BVAL team twice.
