Oakley phones to get Madison prefix Sunday: New telephone numbers for Oakley with the prefix " Madison 5" go into service Sunday, and appeared in the new county directory with the new prefixes for Pittsburg telephones.

The new directories were being delivered this week, but W.W. Miller, Pacific Telephone manager for East County, explained that the old books should be used until Sunday, then they should be discarded and the new directories put into use. Miller also explained that for information, repair service, time of day, or assistance on calls, the red figure, last spot on the dial, should be used alone. The "O" is also dialed for out-of-town calls, and the number given to the operator when she answers.

On party lines, Miller added, other parties on the line may be reached by dialing "O" and asking for repair service for the code number.

Pittsburg wins JV tournament opener: Pittsburg took advantage of five errors by Liberty to pull out a 7-3 victory in the first round of the Pittsburg Junior Varsity baseball tournament.

The tournament continues today at Pittsburg City Park, beginning at 10 a.m. -- unless the weather dealt a different hand.

Clayton Valley, a forfeit winner over Mt. Diablo, was to meet Pittsburg, and Liberty was to meet Mt. Diablo.

Liberty, in search of its first victory of the season, went ahead 1-0 in the first inning on Scott Keplinger's run-scoring single.

A double by Steve Gomez helped ignite a two-run outburst by the Pirates (7-2) in the bottom of the first inning to wipe out Liberty's short-lived lead, but the Lions (6-7) tied the score in the third when Mike Payton doubled and scored on Matt Usher's single.

Winning pitcher Oscar Quesada pitched the first five innings for the Pirates.

Losing pitcher Jake Schuman went the distance with a maximum of efficiency.
