The Friends of the Oakley Library had a wonderful day at Big Break in Oakley on April 12 as more than 200 people showed up to run or walk the trail heading out from the Delta Science Center.
The run was the first big fundraising effort by the Friends, with the goal of raising seed money to start a foundation. That foundation, in turn, will exist to raise funds for a new library in Oakley. The mastermind of the event was avid runner and library supporter Ron Perry, who got the project off the ground and organized all of the details. Other run organizers included Linda Pennock, Julie Perry, Nancy Huffaker, Cindy Tumin and John Dodson.
Volunteers came out in scores at 6 a.m. that morning to help out, including Boy Scout Troup 152, Corey Bitterman, Jay Busby, Fred Lemire, Barry and Kathy Young, Craige and Tracy Nielsen, Wayne and Suzie Morris, Isabelle and Emily Perry, folks from Diablo Vista Dental, the Oakley Community Garden, Oakley Chiropractic, Liberty Mutual Brentwood, Adventure Sports Oakley, Solle Naturals, Ironhouse Sanitary District and Oak Tree Screen Printing.
A huge thank you to all of the event's sponsors: Air Liquide, Shea Homes, California Fitness 24/7, Clif Bar, Sports Authority, Peet's Coffee & Tea, Trader Joe's and IBEW Local 302.
Thanks to the East Bay Regional Park District for working with us on the event, and to Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre for providing some entertainment. Last but not least, thanks to Assemblyman Jim Frazier for attending and offering some pre-race inspirational words to the participants, and Kevin Romick for kicking off the kids run. A great community event, and one that will be repeated next hear we hope!
