ANTIOCH -- Police are looking for a gunman who shot a 22-year-old Antioch man Monday afternoon near the campuses of Antioch High School and Fremont Elementary School.

Officers were called to the 400 block of West 19th Street at 2:14 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire, said Antioch police Lt. John VanderKlugt.

Witnesses said the shooter fired toward a home, ran northeast through the neighborhood, jumping over several fences to escape the scene. He was not arrested. Police were retracing his steps after the shooting to look for evidence.

The victim was taken to a hospital by a friend, and is expected to survive.

Antioch Middle School and Antioch High School were on lockdown for about 15 to 20 minutes because of their proximity to the shooting, Antioch High principal Louie Rocha said.

Police gave the school an all-clear around 2:45 p.m., he said.

The shooter is described as a Hispanic man, about 5-feet 10-inches tall, with long brown hair and wearing a gray T-shirt.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 925-779-6926. Tips can also be texted to 274637 (CRIMES) using the keyword ANTIOCH.
