Tight race atop BVAL baseball standings

  • The race for the Bay Valley Athletic League championship came down to the final week of the regular season as the Liberty and Heritage high baseball teams were tied atop the league standings with 6-2 records after games on May 8. Liberty extended its win streak to three games with a 4-2 win over Pittsburg, scoring twice in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead for good. Heritage had also won three straight coming into this week, including a 2-0 win over Deer Valley. Liberty and Heritage met May 13 for first place, after this newspaper went to press.

    Heritage sweeps BVAL swim titles

  • The Heritage boys and girls swim teams each captured BVAL swim titles at the league championships on May 10. On the boys side, Patriots senior Walker Thaning won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races, and helped the 400 freestyle relay team to victory. On the girls side, freshman Stephanie Backlund won the 200 and 500 freestyle and sophomore Katrina Sudweeks won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke for Heritage.

    Deer Valley primed for NCS playoffs

  • The Deer Valley boys volleyball team completed another perfect run through the BVAL and entered this week's North Coast Section Division I playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The Wolverines, who improved to 36-2 this season with a 25-13, 25-20, 25-16 win over Pittsburg on May 8, received a first round bye and will face either No. 8 American or No. 9 College Park in the quarterfinals on May 16 or 17. Deer Valley is the defending Division I champion.

  • NCS Championships, swimming, May 16-17, 10:30 a.m. -- East Contra Costa County will be well-represented at the NCS Championships at Concord Community Pool.

  • BVAL Championships, track and field, May 17, 9 a.m. -- The best track and field athletes in the BVAL with gather at Pittsburg High for the league championships, with spots in next week's NCS Tri-Valley Area meet on the line.

  • Kevin Milam, Heritage baseball -- Milam pitched a complete game shutout, allowed just two hits and struck out 14 as the Patriots beat Deer Valley 2-0 on May 8.

  • Walker Thaning, Heritage boys swimming -- Thaning, a senior, won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races and helped the 400 freestyle relay team to victory at the BVAL Championships.

  • Emily To'o, Freedom girls swimming -- To'o, a senior, won the 100 butterfly and took second in the 200 IM at the BVAL Championships at Heritage High.
