Brentwood editor and publisher Vicki Ward figured out a long time ago that no matter what race or religion, women are going to have shared experiences through life. In her latest book "More Life's Spices, Seasoned Sistahs Keepin' It Real," she brings together a series of narratives by several woman who tell their stories of their life's journey.

"They speak of self-esteem, family dynamics, surviving obstacles. And overcoming trauma," Ward said. "They share stories of continuing on this road of life, they bare truths about relationships and intimacy, and gently broach the subject of death, and living with loss," Ward said.

Recently, this book of was nominated as a finalist in the ForeWord Magazine's Book of the Year Award 2013.

This is her second book in the "Seasoned Sistahs" series. The first book "Life's Spices from Seasoned Sistahs, a Collection of Life Stories from Mature Women of Color," was published in 2005.

The first book in the series won three awards and is used as a required reading book for Psychology of Women classes at Diablo Valley College.

"All women walk similar paths that bond them in sistah-hood," Ward said. "Women are nurturers. As women, we live a different life than men."

She continues to say that no matter what culture, from all over the world, there are "sistah circles" in the kitchen.

For Ward, this is a place where older women teach younger women how to cook or just sit around and talk about life's lessons.

She explains that it is natural for women to create the circle and to be teachers for the next generation.

After releasing the first book, the DVC instructor asked a few of the ladies to come in and speak with the class about the book, sparking Ward to start touring and speaking on the subject.

"At first, I was stunned and delighted that they wanted us to come in and speak," she said. "It was such a fulfilling experience to get to hear what everyone thought of the stories and to hear the questions they asked," she said.

After finishing the first "Seasoned Sistah" book, Ward knew that she wasn't done, and there were so many more stories to tell. Between the first and the second book, she also wrote "Savvy, Sassy and Bold After 50." While the "Seasoned Sistah" series is for women of all ages, this book was tailored for maturing women looking toward retirement and developing new and exciting lifestyles.

Topics include changing health issues for maturing women, the benefits of proper nutrition and exercise, and the value of mind-body medicine in achieving maximum health.

Next on her agenda is a book that is planned to be released in November called "Supercharge Your Life After 60," which focuses on women between the ages of 60 and 70 and what she refers to as the "dynamic decade" where life can change more in 10 years then it did in the previous 60.

"More of Life's Spices, Seasoned Sistahs Keepin' It Real" can be purchased through Amazon in Kindle format or in print, or can be purchased at www.vickiward.net.
